Holy carp

I'm exhausted and my head is spinning. I woke up at 5:45 this morning and couldn't fall back asleep. Then I had to leave for work earlier than normal because traffic was backed up more than usual due to an accident. Then I had a minor panic attack while stuck in traffic underneath an overpass. I've had a fear of being crushed by one ever since the big 1989 quake in San Francisco.

Anyways, I get to work and am conversing with Kelly and the next thing I know, she comes over and sits next to my desk and says, (in a whispered tone) "Nobody here knows this, but I am going to tell you something..."

Oh god. What? Why me? How will I react??

She continues; "Bridget (a paralegal who also works in the office) and I are together. I mean, "together". For four years now". *huge sigh of relief* <--mine, not hers.
I had had a moment of fearing she was going to expose a secret life as a dominatrix or something. I even had her totally pictured in the gear, with the whip and everything. *snort*

So this changes things a bit. All of a sudden, I am a trusted person who for some reason, after three days of employment, she decides to share this "secret" with. She's worked there for almost 2 years, btw.

I just smiled and and asked a few questions...can't even remember what. I hope she knew from my reaction that I wasn't shocked, or bothered or *anything* from her revelation. I was touched by the fact that she felt comfortable telling me. I also felt awkward because when Bridget came in, I felt a little like I was being watched and when you know someone is suspiciously looking for signs of *something*, it's almost hard to act "normal", kwim?

So, that was my day. *whew* It has been a long one. I feel good more than anything that Kelly shared that with me. I am happy to know she has a step-daughter and that her anniversary is coming up. It makes me sad that she hides it all from people that I think would not have a problem with it, and yet I can't fault her one bit because I just don't know how it feels in her position. I was glad to know that her family knows and supports her. She just wants to keep it out of her professional life.

It feels like a little bit of pressure on one hand though, to be the keeper of something like this. I don't doubt I will keep her confidence, but at the same time, things I would normally ask her about (regarding Bridget for example, who everyone knows is her roommate) might sound different to her, knowing that I know what I do, if that makes sense.

In the end, I have a new friend. Yes, she has some personality traits that will likely bug me or piss me off, but I bet I'll have some that bother her too.

Sorry for this long post on a Friday. I just wanted to get it out now, while I had it all my mind.

I've got a busy weekend ahead... and I just want to sleep, lol. Have great weekends everyone!

Oh! My kids school is having a spring carnival thing today and I'm going to see if I can go. I'll show up and take them by surprise. *evil grin* I'll report back if I catch them in the act of doing something forbidden, lol.

You have had quite an interesting week. Yes, I think "interesting" is a good word for it.

Which one is your direct superior? Which one is the one who pointed out your mistakes?

How do you feel after being away from home this week? How do your kids feel?

Conner has a bike-a-thon thing today to benefit St. Jude's. Of course we didn't get any fundrasing information until last week. I didn't realize that it was a fundrasing thing. I thought they just got to have a fun bike day each year, and he was now at that age.

I don't like fundrasiers for kids. I get hit by too many in my neighborhood. I try to be fair, but there are also times when I just don't answer the door or avoid the moms.

I ended up stroking a check for $35 for Conner this morning so that he could get the special shirt. *sighs* Kids are just so expensive. I realize St. Jude's is a good cause. I'm not so much irritated by that, I just try to plan all of that spending a little better.

I wish I could go there today to see it, but since I didn't have enough notice, I can't.

Enjoy your day off. Enjoy the carnival!!

Yay for the weekend being here!

How odd Kelly decided to come out to you. After only knowing you for that many days...weird. She must have been dying to tell someone and figured you seemed accepting.

I want to go to the carnival!

Three days does seem like a pretty short time for a great big "secret". Maybe she is testing you? But trust your instincts here - maybe she IS a gay dominatrix.

In California, I would hate to be stuck under an overpass. Generally I hate being stuck in a tunnel, especially one that goes under water. And since the 35W bridge collapsed last summer I always hold my breath when I cross the Hastings bridge, which is identical in construction, has been declared "fracture critical," is under repair right now and is scheduled for replacement in 2010. They shut down another bridge over the Mississippi in North Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago because it was failing. Pretty soon we will all be back to fording the river or taking ferries or something.

Boo, Kelly is not my boss, she is the paralegal I was hired to assist. She is the same one who pointed out my mistake.

The week went by pretty fast. I have been tired, but also happy to be productive. The kids seem to be just fine. I'll really start stressing more when they are off for summer break. :(

How fun for Conner! I do agree about the fundraisers, though.

Kim, that's what Kelly said more than once; that she was so relieved to finally have someone at work who she could be open with.

Swami, not sure that it's a test. She really doesn't want anyone else to know, so it would be quite risky to take that chance with me. She told me because I inquired about her myspace page and (I've seen it now) she hesitated because she is 'out' on her page.

Bridges scare me too. I'd forgotten about that bridge that collapsed until just now...that was so frightening!

I think Kelly could become a valuable ally. She trusted you with something personnal, I think she'll be on your side, and will want to help you succeed.

What a week, I'm not surprised you are tired, but it sounds like a good week.

And I agree Boo, about the using children for fundraisers, I think it's different when the kids get older and plan it themselves. My other pet peeve is when they guilt your kid into becoming little salespersons for some crappy over-priced junk to make money for the school, and the companies profit the most.
No thank-you my child will not be participating in the gift wrap sale, I would rather write the PTA a check directly.
By 3rd grade my daughter had learned to refuse the packet and say " My mom doesn't believe in me selling stuff"

You know that would be a good topic to explore more sometime.

Yep, what Buggy said.
Sometimes, coming out to one person, makes it easier to come out to others. Maybe she is seeing if she can trust you. Good that she can. I think it's a compliment to you that she trusted you though. *smooch*

but you should have messed with her and told her that you hate homos. *snort*

*snort* @ Carey. I'll have to tell you more about her when I see you next week. There's a couple questions I want to ask you.

*smooch* Buggy. I agree with you.

Well, your new job certainly doesn't sound boring.

I'd like to ask Boo about "stroking" a check, though.

Did you win anything at the carnival? Was your DD working at the kissing booth?
