First of all, Happy Monday! Normally, I am happy to see Monday roll around, but today, I have a lot to do and won't be around much (which means I miss playing here, with you guys). :(
Let's start with Saturday. I made plans with a friend, who happens to be the girl my brother is currently breaking up with. We let the kids swim for a while, then we decided that just her and I would go to dinner. We chose a local, little Pub, which apparently was "their" place. She was emotional after one beer. I drank three rum and cokes, and was pretty much just sitting there, listening to her cry about him. After a while a live band came in, and we couldn't hear each other at all, so that was nice. ;-)
Yesterday (Sunday) was a weird day. I went to church for the first time in a while, and wasn't impressed with the message I received. Yes, I know it comes from the bible, but the delivery was offensive, and I sat there thinking maybe I was so far gone (from Christianity) that it wasn't for me anymore. I was really frustrated, and when it was over, I was in the parking lot with my brother, and I said, "I'm really upset about the way that guy was talking..." and before I could finish, he said, "oh, I know. Dad and I were already discussing it, everyone is pissed." So, I was actually relieved that it wasn't just me, and that everyone was upset. Anyhow, that was the morning drama (and sorry, but I don't want to elaborate on any of that).
As I left there, my brother's ex-GF called me, to discuss why he won't call her back, and what he's doing, and how he's feeling, and...blah blah blah. It was awkward, and frustrating, and I really don't want to be in the middle of it. Then my family headed to lunch, which was fine, and kinda fun as we got to sit around and sorta laugh at how ridiculous the morning had gone. I went from lunch, to the tiny Cancer Society Shop right down the way from the restaurant, with my mom. Everyone else left, and I figured we wouldn't be there too long (what was I thinking?) because it's a small place, and we were both wearing high heels, so I thought we wouldn't want to stay long. Anyways, I forgot how she is. *dumbass* After three hours in what cannot be larger than a 500 square foot shop, we left. As I got to my house, my kids ran out saying my dad was taking them for ice cream. Fine. Off they go. (yay!)
But then, (more drama ensues) my mother calls me from her house, saying that my (other, younger) brother and his pregnant girlfriend are there, swimming. No biggie...until, I find out their Pitbull was there also. My dad had just gotten there with my kids, and my niece and nephew (with my older brother) and was going to let the kids swim. Well, not sure if I had mentioned this already in my blog, but my YB (youngerB) has two Pits, and the male killed one of the family cats last week. It had known (been around) this cat for years, and the cat wasn't even afraid of him, so I have no idea why it did this. I had already been leery of the dogs, but we don't hang out with YB, so I never really made hard rules about it.
After the cat killing incident, I decided that that was it, the kids were restricted from being around the dogs. My YB is not the nicest guy, and I know he's kicked his Pit, as discipline before (he's an asshole) so I can't rely on the "maybe the owners are responsible" thing. And anyways, how many owners have said "Gee, he was always so gentle, I never would have thought my nice dog would maul that little child to death..." So today, when I realized the dog was there, DH and I decided to get the kids and bring them home. Well, of course my dad calls me and says "what's going on?" and I proceed to tell him that I just wasn't comfortable with the situation...and he interrupts me and says, "don't you think you're overreacting a little bit?" I got totally pissed, because I didn't want my decision to be questioned, and I didn't want to argue about it, so I snapped, and said I didn't care if it pissed him off, but I wasn't going to take a chance with my kids lives...etc.. We hung up, very awkwardly. Anyways, the kids came home and were very bummed (of course) and I explained to them, the best I could, that I was just trying to protect them. Later, my YB found out why my kids left, and made some smartass remarks about how "we were being stupid, and he would never bring the dog if it were dangerous", and all that crap. Whatever. *rolls eyes*
So, does anyone out here have Pitbull experience? My guess is that the far majority of them are safe, and good pets. My only inarguable complaint is that they don't bite like other dogs. They are deadlier. So, that was my drama for the day. More than I cared for, really. And look! As a result, I have this long, completely rambly post. *sigh* Shall I go out and create some smut to blog about? *grin*

Wow. Talk about drama!
As far as the pit goes, you were absolutely correct in keeping your kids away from it. The fact that after living with the cat for years, the dog snaps and kills it indicates that the dog has issues. I know a great many people who after that, would have put the dog down. The fact that your brother *kicks* his dog for discipline? Grossly reprehensible. Pits are a tough breed. They can be most gentle and loving and FUN! but they have to be treated kindly by their owners or they'll turn.
Yeah. What tkit said. I don't think you were overreacting. And so what if you were? They're your kids, you have the say in who/what they are around. Better safe than sorry. *smooch*
*waits for smut*
Smut is always good.
On the Pitbull front you are totally correct. I would never leave a child in any kind of unstructured setting with an unrestrained, untrained pitbull. Playing in a yard with a pool likely involves a fair bit of running around and squeeling by the kids--all things that might trigger an aggressive reaction from an untrained dog.
Pibull owners (all dog owners, but expecially owners of an aggressive, guard/attack breed (like Pits and Rottweilers) absolutely should take their dogs thru advanced obedience training because their dogs can be lethal too fast. A pissed off cocker spaniel will chase you & nip at your heels. A pissed off Pitbull will chase you, knock you down and grab your head or throat, squeeze and not let go! I would never, ever, ever leave my kids to play with someone else's unrestrained Pitbull in the vicinity!
Your brother is an idiot if he does not realize this. Like Tkit said, he should have put the dog down. Most male dogs don't show their true aggressiveness until they are fully, physically mature--around age 2. Consider the cat a warning. Also? I fear for pregnant YB's girlfriend's baby when it comes, especially since YB doesn't seem mature enough to realize what his dogs are capable of.
Sorry to go off on you, but dog owners like your YB just annoy me.
If the dog (don't care about the breed) has already killed a cat that it knew for ages, it is a dangerous animal and you did exactly the right thing to bring your kids home.
Do you want to upset some people or have a dead kid?
That's a pretty easy question to answer, eh?
Thanks, guys. Now if only I could say "hey, my blog friends told me I was right...". Heh.
I forgot to mention, when DH and I had our kids, we got rid of our Rott, which was a gentle, trained dog. We loved her, and we knew she was safe, but since she couldn't look me in th eeye and promise to never snap, we gave her to a friend, where she lived happily until olg age took her last year. My point is that we've known what it feels like to love an animal, but put the kids first.
My whole family (parents included) are very unhappy they're bringing a baby into a house with two Pits.
I agree with your decision. There was a story in our local paper about a pit bull who mauled an 11 month old girl's face. The parents had given the dog to the grandparents when the baby was born, thinking the dog might be jealous. Well, of course the little 11 month old was a big girl now, right [sarcasm], so they brought the dog back home to live with them. First day, the pit mauled the baby's face.
What a horrible situation.
You definitely did the right thing. I don't give a rats ass who gets their feelings hurt. Your children's safety is #1. Period. No questions. I'd have no problem telling them all to F-off. In fact, I'd have no problem calling animal control.
Poor dog though. He really kicks it? What a fucker! Sorry, I know he's your brother but he's a big ass.
You don't have to justify your decisions mm. You don't need to back it up with any proof. It's your decision and they have to respect that.
Tkit said everything I was going to.
Wow Puffy, that's horrific. Beyond horrible. *sad sigh*
Nookie, my brother would probably deny ever kicking it, but his GF was dumb enough to tell me that, some time ago. I have no idea if he *still* kicks it, but to show that kind of a lapse in judgement even once is enough for me. It's hard having a sibling you don't like. :(
Yep, Tkit's very wise.
*smooches* everyone.
Tell me about it. I have 9 siblings and I don't like most of them LOL.
*waves at MM*
*wink*
Your kids, your responsibility, your decision. From my perspective, you are a caring parent doing your best to make the right decisions. I would have done the same.
