So, Kelly has been gone for a week now (she went to Vegas) and I must say, her absence has really made me realize how unhappy she makes me. I've had a wonderful (albeit stressful) week while I've covered. It's a hard job to do without a second person, and even harder for me as the new girl. I am proud of what I've learned this week though and one thing I realized is that when she gets back, I will no longer be turning to her for assistance. This week has shown me that when left with no other options, I *can* problem solve and figure things out. I am dreading her return on Thursday but will be happy to get back to my regular schedule of having Wednesdays off.
On another note, who here has a Nugget Supermarket? We just had one open here and I have to say, I *love* it! It was decorated so nicely and had so many more selections than our "regular" store (SaveMart, I think). Do you shop at an "upscale" grocery store or do you do the "smart" thing and shop at the cheaper places? I can definitely tell a difference in the produce, but I'm also shallow enough to admit that I just like the trendier decor of the nicer places. I did shop smart though and tried only to get the sale items. I'm not sure which stores are national chains... do you have Bel-Air, Albertson's, Safe Way, Pak-n-Save, or Winco? I'm sure we have others but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Weird! We have *all* those stores where I love, too. I went into the new Nugget today for the first time.
It is indeed beautiful. Some of the prepared foods looked insanely good, but I don't think I could afford to eat there very much. For just about the same price, I'm used to somebody serving it to me hot, filling my water, and taking the dishes away when I'm done.
I didn't dare even sample anything for fear I'd spend a fortune.

Never even heard of a Nugget other than MickeyD's. We have a Super Walmart or Reasor's. I don't buy groceries at Walmart, even though they are cheaper. I bought hamburger meat there once and a ton of water cooked out.
Reasor's looks like any other grocery store, but they do have a butcher on hand that will butterfly a chicken for me :)

I had a discussion yesterday with my boss about grocery stores. We have Ukrop's, Food Lion and Kroger here. Ukrop's is definately on the upper end, but I have shopped in all three, and I do not think the prices are way more than the other two. I love it. It's super clean, and there is a big difference in prepared foods and deli items.
The Food Lions are pretty much junk. I will shop at the one near my house because it seems to be among the cleaner ones, but I don't prefer it.
The Krogers that are now being built are very nice, so I would likely shop there - I think they are putting one right near our house.
Ukrop's is now offering a gas discount in conjunction with a local gas chain. I do realize there prices will probably increase at the grocery store in order for me to get the gas discount, but I will still do it.
Oh, one other thing, Ukrop's is the local store. I have started supporting the local guy more over the chain.
We don't have any of those stores! We have Pick-N'-Save, Cub, Piggly Wiggly, Copps, Woodmans, Sentry, Jubilee and some Economarts around Wisconsin.
I usually shop at the medium scale store-Copps. Cub is a little more discountish, though I shop at the new nice one. Woodman's is our big discount store, employee stock owned. I wouldn't mind shopping there, but it's ugly, messy, and uber-crowded. It's also organized very different from most others. Sentry is probably our highest end grocery store (other than Whole Foods). It's way more expensive and not that much nicer than Copps.
yay for getting along without Kelly! Of course you could do it! It will feel very good to not depend on Kelly.
Oh, and Tummy...I also don't like to shop at the Super Wal-Marts or Super Targets for groceries other than granola bars, chips, etc. Fresh stuff there ooks me out, particularly the meat. I've tried it and hate the various beef and pork products.
Okay, first of all, I meant to say where I *live*, not where I *love*. :)
Nugget, Bel-Air, and Raleys are all locally owned small supermarket chains. Raleys/Bel Air actually extends to Nevada and the Bay Area, but otherwise is just Central/Northern California.
Save-Mart is another small central valley chain that started in Modesto, CA. It bought out many of the Albertson's stores. Albertson's, which had merged with another small chain (Lucky) is out of business in California, though they still have a presence in at least Idaho, where they originated. My daughter goes to school in Caldwell, where they are kinda based. Her school (now the College of Idaho) was called Albertson's College for about 20 years because of a huge endowment the Albertson family awarded the college.
Winco Foods was also founded in Idaho, and now has stores in five states. They are employee owned warehouse stores with great prices and a good selection. They don't have union workers and are often subject to labor protests as a result.
Safeway is a national chain. Maybe the only one in our area. Pak N Save is Safeway's version of the warehouse store. There are a couple of Super Walmarts in the area, but I've never been inside one here.
Nugget is a special market. I hope it can survive in Elk Grove. Maybe we can meet there for lunch someday ! ;)
I shop at Lucky, Safeway and Trader Joes. Mostly Lucky (previously Alberstons) because Safeway seems to be going downhill fast. Most of the time they don't have what I need.
Never heard of those stores. We shop at Giant Eagle mostly.

I haven't heard of Nugget stores. We have Bristol Farms, Gelsons, and Whole Foods for our upscale expensive markets. We have Vons, which is owned by Safeway. we have Ralphs which is a Kroeger store. We also have Albertsons and of course, I love Trader Joes.
Ha! When I was single I used to grocery shop at gas stations. God, I miss those days.
MTW, according to my DH, if they make you a sandwich, then drop it and then make you another one while you wait, there is *no* charge!
Gotta say, I am suprised by how many stores are out there that I've never heard of before. I kinda assumed these were national chains. *thanks MTW for the info*
Piggly Wiggly?? Wasn't that in a movie or something? I didn't know it really existed, lol.
Hilton Head has a Pigly Wigly. By far, it is the most expensive grocery store I have ever been to. Ever. Ever. And it can be simply because of location.
Our first year there, it was a dump. An expensive dump. The next year, it was the Four Seasons.
Piggly Wiggly isn't cheap, but I'm sure the prices are inflated near HH. They do, however, have excellent pork here. It's my favorite place to get pork. <---has no idea how it is to get porked there.
We have some upscale stores that I visit for specialty items, especially gluten free things.
But we also have a new Pick N Save that was built in an upscale area, and I love that store. It has a player piano, a coffee bar, and lots of specialty items in each aisle!
I don't know what a Nugget store is though.

I do most of my shopping at Trader Joes and Guenardi's (Safeway in Pennsylvania), with the very occasional excursion to the Wholefoods a couple blocks from my apartment. I can no longer justify getting my groceries there. WAAAY too expensive, especially since I don't give a crap if something's organic or not. Screw it! Give me pesticides!
Yay for pesticides! I love 'em! Otherwise, who knows what those bugs have been doing on all those fruits and vegetables???

I buy most of my stuff at Cub. Stillwater is the headquarters for Cub foods and has their flagship store. It is HUGE and has everything at great prices. They added a huge international section a couple of years ago, which makes me very happy.
My more upscale shoppiong places are called Kowalski's Great bakery
& deli there too. Also shop at River Valley Co-op when I want certified health food type stuff.
Of course, I buy all my red meat at a gas station/meat market in Lake Elmo.
